Chapters 1-5

All work should be done in your binder. Label it Chapters 1-5 The Giver. Label each section individually. The Vocabulary should be done in the double column technique. We will continue to add to this list as we read the book.

Vocabulary Words: Look at how the word is used in the novel. Then look the word up in the dictionary and choose the correct definition. The page numbers are given for the paperback and the hardcover. The first number represents the paperback; the second number is for the hardcover.

On a page in your binder entitle it Rules of the Society. As you read the chapters in the book, list the rules you come across. The first five chapters reveal many of the society’s rules.

The society pictured in the book has certain characteristics that may seem

"strange" or "different" to the reader. Make a list, of what seems unusual or strange to you. Then list how the society is similar to your own. Now list what questions are running through your mind after reading these chapters. List at least three questions, but you may write more.

The term "released" is mentioned often in these first four chapters. In chapter one it is mentioned several times. In chapter four Larissa describes Roberto’s release.

Do the following:

Make a list on the references to release in these chapters. Write the page

number and the quote from the book. Be sure to find all of them.

Based on these descriptions of "release" write one paragraph explaining

what you think release means in terms of the book. Explain how the characters react to the idea of "release". Finally, discuss your own personal thoughts.

Jonas tells about a dream he had. Jonas’ mother tells him that he has begun to have "stirring". The cure for "stirrings" is for Jonas to take a pill.

What you think these stirrings are?

Why do you think the society requires its members to take pills once the stirrings begin?

How do you feel about this?

Do you see any advantage to this rule? How would you feel about living in a society that did this?
