Character Sketch

You will be writing a character sketch. You should complete the following steps:

Choosing a Subject:

Think of a person to write about. It should be someone you know well, so you will have enough information to include. Your subject might be a person you admire, or he/she might be someone you think would be interesting to write about.

Initial Brainstorming:

First, make a list of all the qualities or character traits you think this person has. For example, you might think the person is generous or helpful. Perhaps your subject has a particular talent. Think of all the reasons that make you like/admire this person. List as many qualities as you can think of.

Choosing Your Character Traits:

Once you have made an initial brainstorming list, you need to choose TWO CHARACTER TRAITS. In making your choice, choose the two traits that best characterize this person. However, make sure that the traits you choose are ones that you have enough details and examples that you could use as support in your essay. You would need to have several examples to show this trait as well as an extended anecdote (story) that would show this trait.

Detailed Brainstorming Sheet:

Now you are ready to fill out the detailed brainstorming sheet. For each trait, list the details/examples that you will use to show this trait. For example, if you said the person was generous, then give specific details and examples that show how generous he/she is.

Then, think of a longer story that would also show the person’s generosity. If you can’t think of enough details, then you don’t have a good trait to write about.

Do this for both character traits.

From Brainstorming to Essay:

Your essay will have six paragraphs:

v An introduction

v Character Trait One—Example Paragraph

v Character Trait One—Anecdote Paragraph

v Character Trait Two—Example Paragraph

v Character Trait Two—Anecdote Paragraph

v Conclusion

Revisions:

After peer/self and possibly teacher conference, you should now revise your essay to make improvements. You may need to add more details and examples. Or perhaps you may need to reorganize your paragraphs. Improve your sentence structure to make for more interesting writing. Include SMILEY FACE TRICKS to add creativity to your writing. Write a second draft

Editing:

Edit your writing using the various editing checklists/materials you have in your binders.

Final Draft:

Write your final draft. You may want to include a picture of your subject, make a cover, etc.
