HOLOCAUST BOOK PROJECT

You will be creating a diary for the novel you have chosen to read. It will be written from the main character’s point of view. You need to capture the personality and feelings of that character. The diary should include the following entries:

Entry One

This entry should introduce the character. He/she will speak in the first person point of view. The character should provide the reader with details about his/her life. For example, tell how old the character is, where he/she lives, any details about his/her family, religion, profession, etc. This first entry should also give an idea of the problem facing the main character. How are the circumstances of the Holocaust affecting the main character?

Entries Two – Five

Choose four main events or scenes from your novel. These should be important events that happen to the character in the novel. The events should cover the entire novel. The reader of the diary should be able to understand the events of the novel. They should be taken from the beginning, middle, and ending (intro, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution). In each entry, describe what is happening to the character. Most importantly, reveal the character’s feelings about what is happening. The entry should be "emotional" rather than just a summary of events. Get inside the character’s head.

Final Entry

The final entry will reveal the conclusion or resolution to your novel. It should discuss what ultimately happens to your character, how he/she makes it through the events of the Holocaust, and how he/she feels about everything that has happened to him/her. If your character does not survive the Holocaust, someone who would know of the final events in the novel could write the final entry. Create a fictitious character.

Review Entry

This entry is not written from the character’s point of view. It is an entry written as you, the reader of the novel. In this entry write your opinions about the novel. How did reading about the Holocaust, specifically the story you read, affect you? This should be an honest response about the emotional impact the novel had on you.

How the Diary should LOOK:

Try to give your diary an authentic look, so it really looks like a diary. Create dates from the novel or make one’s up that seem historically accurate. Be CREATIVE!
