EMOTION POEM

Choose an emotional state to write about—decide whether you see this positively or negatively.

Write eight expanded lines which define and describe this emotional state. Use descriptive details, figurative language, metaphor, etc.

Vary your line length; some shorter and others longer.

Begin with a basic line that states the emotion and then defines it.

Alone is

Happiness is

Frustration Is

Contentment is

Anger is

Sadness is

Continue the other lines giving further expansions for the emotion.

The last line should be your personal comment about this emotion—it wraps up the poem.

Model

                     Alone Is

Alone is fishing in a river all by yourself.

Alone is eating by a campfire on a cold

night when the owls are awake.

Alone is living in the woods by yourself.

Alone is lying on a grassy sunny hill

looking at the big blue sky, watching

           the birds fly by.

Alone is sleeping in your sleeping bag

in the dry backyard looking at the crystal

white stars in the dark black sky.

Alone is sitting under a green shady tree

           eating lunch by yourself.

Alone is taking a solitary walk

           during the early morning sunrise.

Alone is when I am one with nature.

Notice how the lines that are longer extend to another line and get indented.

Notice the periods come at the end of each sentence, not each line.

Notice how the last line expresses the person’s overall feelings or theme of the poem.
