The purpose of this assignment is to interview a peer and write a story about him/her. Through your interview you are to zero in on an interesting story and write about that one aspect of your subject. Do not write a list of things this person likes. Choose a narrow focus and develop it into an interesting story.

Before your partner will interview you, think about a story that you might be able to tell him/her for this assignment. Use the following questions to help you think.

Do you have a visible scar? Explain how you got it.

What is your best or worst memory of this summer? This past year? Your whole life?

Who has had the greatest influence on your life?

What is the one thing of which you are most proud?

Do you have any phobias? Explain.

Describe the most unusual experience you have had?

What lesson have you learned that you will remember for the rest of your life?

What is the kindest or meanest thing you have ever done to someone or someone has done to you?

Try to have one or several possible stories to share with your partner. When you get together, you will share these stories with each other. The writer should decide which story he/she thinks will make the best piece.

The next step is to design a list of questions that will help you to uncover enough information that you will be able to write the story. Once you have your questions, interview your subject. Keep digging to get all the information necessary.

The idea is to uncover all the details you can so you will be able to write your story. Find out the facts as well as the person’s feelings. Get direct quotes answers on the sheet provided. Dig, Dig, Dig!
