Note-taking for Research

Use the following format when you are taking notes during research:

Place your question/subtopic at the top of the note-card.

In the upper right corner of the card place the title of the source.

On the bottom right corner place the page numbers of the source you are using.

Read the source. Determine which question/subtopic the information should go under. Then place the information in your own words on the card.

Try to use short phrases or lists rather than write full sentences.

If you must take the information word for word, then place quotation marks around the information. Then next to that information put the exact page.

When you use a different source, begin a new note-card and place the title of the new source at the top.

As you are reading from your source, you will be moving back and forth among note-cards, depending upon the information.

At the bottom left corner, place the author/speaker.

Students have a copy of these instructions and an actual sample of a note card in their packets.
