Review Sheet for test on Impact Short Stories

 

You should set up a study guide for the test based on the following. You will be given time in class to reread or skim through the stories. In your notebooks, take notes, set up charts, etc., in order to prepare for this test.

 

STORIES: "The Dinner Party"

"A Path Through the Cemetery"

"Charles"

"All Summer in a Day"  (You have this story on a handout)

"Too Soon a Woman"    (You have this story on a handout)

                   1.   Be able to define the following terms:

   IRONY  

    You should be able to explain any ironic endings to stories               

    FORESHADOWING

   You should be able to explain and give examples of foreshadowing from stories.

2. Titles – You should be able to explain the importance of the titles for the stories we read. (in some stories titles have more meaning than in others)

3. Setting – You should be able to explain the importance of the setting to the stories we read. (in some stories setting is more important than others). You would need to be able to give details about the setting and explain why the setting has an effect on the events that happen in the story.

4. Internal Conflict and External Conflict – You should be able to explain these two terms and give examples of each type of conflict from the stories we read.

5. Characters: You should be able to compare/contrast characters from the stories we read. There will be two essays based on character. You should be able to:

A. In one essay explain how two characters could be considered heroes and why.

B. In another essay explain how two characters could be considered victims and why.

(To prepare for this, think of the stories where a character could be considered either a hero or a victim and study for the essay with those characters in mind)

 

This test will be primarily essay and short answer type questions. It is important that you are familiar with the stories so that you can write about them. If necessary, during the time given in class or during Enrichment, reread the stories that you don’t have handouts for. The ones we gave you, "Too Soon a Woman" and "All Summer in a Day" you can read at home. Also during the time in class, you should make notes for yourself.
