8th Grade Reading

This year students will continue their exploration of literature. In addition students will prepare for the GEPA, the state test. In preparation for high school, students will learn the skills necessary to write thesis essays about literature.

Here are just some of the units students will be covering this year:

	Short Story Unit (phase stories)
	Short Story Unit (parent/child relationships)
	Short Story Unit (changes and choices)
	The Giver - a novel
	The Diary of Anne Frank - Holocaust unit
	Poetry

In addition to the in-class units, students will also be reading novels of their own choice. Independent reading will take place every Friday. Students will be doing a variety of book projects connected with these novels.

Students should not only depend on Friday's in-class independent reading. Students should be reading at least 1/2 hour (4-5 times a week).
